Dandelion Botanical Sitz Bath

I picked up a very fragrant full batch of Sari’s Sitz Bath from Dandelion Botanical Company in Ballard yesterday and will be handing out some packets to interested clients, postpartum. The ingredients are all organic and include the following: uva ursi, rosemary leaf, sea salt, marshmallow root, plantain, comfrey leaf, chamomile, chickweed, calendula and lavender flowers. Sean laughed when he read the ingredients and wondered why I didn’t just go weeding on our CSA farm. True. And these are hand gathered herbs so the instructions are to take 8 Tbs. and simmer in two cups of water for 10 minutes to make sure any bacteria present is killed off. After the herbs have simmered, strain into a tub and use 2x daily for one week for perineal care. This strained tea can also be put in a little perineum cleansing bottle and dosed out that way. I simmered up a double batch and strained half into a clean glass jar to be used for the second bath. I have a sense that one could add more water to the simmered and strained herbs to steep a second time but of-course, the potency would be diminished.
Midwifery Today has a good online article on tear classifications and herbs for perineal care, a how to for sitz baths if you have your own recipe. The article mentions experiementing with cold and warm water in case of swelling.
